

About Adult Literacy Council (ALC)
Mission Statement
- To promote public awareness of the need for literacy education in the Clarksville-Montgomery County-Fort Campbell Area;
- To recruit students who are under-educated in basic reading and computation skills and persons with English as a second language;
- To recruit and train tutors who are interested in teaching adults with low reading and computation skills;
- To provide assistance to adults whose reading, comprehension and/or math skills are below 7th grade level;
- To obtain and allocate funds for the local adult literacy program.
Adopted: 1985
Programs & Services
- The Adult Literacy Council provides tutors to support the Adult Basic Education program that includes Level 1 GED.
- ALC provides tutors for all English as a Second Language classes including beginning, advanced, and basic English.
- ALC provides one-on-one tutoring free of charge for adults who want to learn to read or to improve their reading skills.
- ALC provides a limited number of basic math tutors for students who request assistance for test or job preparation.
- ALC provides training for all volunteer tutors wanting to work with adult learners. Training is also provided in the Laubach Tutoring System.
- ALC maintains an on-going effort to promote public awareness of the need for literacy education in the Clarksville-Montgomery County-Fort Campbell area.
- ALC works to form partnerships with other organizations and businesses to provide additional sites where tutoring can be done.
Benefits
- The target population for the Clarksville-Montgomery County Adult Literacy Council program is the adult non-reader population. As individuals avail themselves of the Adult Education services and are introduced to the one-on-one free private tutoring, they become excited about the possibility of improving their lives and achieving their goals.
- Adult learners who improve their reading skills feel better about themselves, they are able to become more effective parents and they become an asset to the community.

The Adult Literacy Council is governed by a Board of Directors. Board Meetings are held at Clarksville-Montgomery County Public Library.

Overview
The Clarksville-Montgomery County Adult Literacy Council was established in 1985 to promote public awareness of the need for literacy education in the area.
The Adult Literacy Council recruits and trains tutors interested in teaching adults with low reading and computation skills or students who have a need to learn English as a second language. The Adult Literacy Council works in cooperation with other literacy projects and seeks to obtain and allocate funds for local literacy programs. A major function of Adult Literacy Council is to support the Adult Education Program by providing free one-on-one tutoring for Adult Education students who need special assistance.
The Literacy Council has two part time (20 hours per week) employees: the director (Velma Jo Williams) and the office assistant (Carol Davis). The office is open from 9 to 4 Monday through Friday.
